You Better Belize It: A 40th Birthday Girls Trip to San Pedro

I’ve always said San Pedro, Belize is one of my favorite places on Earth but getting to share it with two of my best friends for the first time? That was next-level.

For my 40th birthday, my husband pulled off the surprise of a lifetime. In front of my girlfriends, he handed me a gift... and inside were three plane tickets to Belize, along with a reservation at one of my favorite places on the island: Ramon’s Village Resort. He booked everything himself - flights, hotel, the whole thing, for just us girls. I was completely shocked (and, let’s be honest, tearing up a bit). Darcy and Brooke had never been to San Pedro before, and I couldn’t wait to show them why I love it so much.

Travel and First Stop: Ramon’s Village Resort

Ramon’s is my happy place. Even though it’s right across the street from the tiny San Pedro airport, the moment you step onto the property, it feels like you’ve entered a tropical hideaway. Lush gardens, thatched-roof villas, swaying palm trees, it’s a vibe. The beachfront is one of the best on the island, the restaurant is peaceful and delicious, and the dive shop makes it super easy to book excursions.

We flew out of Oklahoma City, and even though we had an early flight, we squeezed in a little pre-trip shopping. We all have our flying quirks. Brooke has her routine down with essential oils, her blanket, and eye mask. Darcy? She’s asleep before we’re even wheels up. Me? Somewhere in between.

The short 15-minute puddle jumper flight from Belize City to San Pedro was a hit (those views—still not over them), and we even met a kind couple we ran into again later in the week. That’s Belize for you!

Dinner & Chicken Drop

After dinner at Ramon’s, we headed to Wayo’s for the Chicken Drop, which is a must-do if you’ve never experienced it. (Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like—place your bet on a number, and if the chicken poops on it, you win. Belize keeps it real.)

Well, of course, Darcy won—because of course she did! But the best part wasn’t even the prize—it was the moment we met a local boy who had helped her place her bet. He couldn’t have been more than 8 or 9, but he was hustling in the sweetest way, helping tourists play the game and earning a few dollars in the process.

He ended up hanging out with us at our table for a little while, and let me tell you—this kid was incredible. Smart, kind, and so well-spoken. He told us all about his life in San Pedro, about going to school on the island, and about how some of his family lives on the mainland. He shared that he wants to be a doctor someday, and honestly, we have no doubt he’ll get there. He had a spark—something special that stuck with all three of us.

It was one of those small but powerful reminders of what makes Belize so unforgettable. Yes, the views are stunning and the beaches are paradise, but it’s the people—the warmth, the openness, the realness—that makes this place feel like home every time we return.

Day 2: Secret Beach Adventures

The next morning, we loaded up our golf cart and made the 45-minute ride out to Secret Beach—arguably one of the most iconic spots on the island. The drive itself is part of the adventure: bumpy, a little wild, and full of scenery that makes you forget to care how long it takes. Ladies—pack a good, supportive sports bra for trip there and back!

Once we got there, we bar-hopped our way through the day—each place with its own energy and personality.

We started at Maruba Beach Klub, which has a great vibe, comfy loungers, and one of the most refreshing places to post up in the water with a drink. They’re also known for a very unique shot—you take it out of a jar that has a snake inside. Yup. An actual snake, soaking in who-knows-what. We passed (hard pass), but it made for some good laughs and shocked expressions from other tourists braver than we were.

Then we wandered over to Blue Bayou, which ended up being one of our favorites. They had a live DJ playing, tables in the water, and some of the best food of the trip. You can literally sit waist-deep in the clearest, bluest water, with ceviche in one hand and a cocktail in the other. What more could you want?

Our last stop of the day was Swing Bar—no, not that kind of swing. It’s named for the swings that hang from the bar and seating area. It’s playful, colorful, and just the right mix of chill and fun. The bartenders kept the energy up, and the whole vibe was carefree in the best way.

Pro Tips for Secret Beach:

  • Go early to grab a good seat, especially if you want a shady lounger or table in the water

  • Bring sunscreen and bug spray—Belize sun is no joke, and the bugs don’t care how much fun you’re having

  • Wear a good bra for the bumpy golf cart ride out there (we weren’t joking about that one)

  • Pack snorkel gear if you have it (or rent some)—there’s decent shallow snorkeling nearby

  • Lean into the adventure—the journey is part of the experience

We spent nearly the whole day soaking in the sun, dancing in the water, people-watching, and laughing until our faces hurt. It was one of those perfect vacation days that you don’t realize is core memory material until you're back home wishing you could relive it.

Day 3: Palapa Bar, Local Shopping, & Nighttime Street Food

We kicked off the day with a visit to one of my longtime favorites—Palapa Bar & Grill. Built right over the water, it’s the kind of place where you sit back, sip something cold, and let the ocean breeze and music set the mood. We did the honorary writing of our names (LBD Lacey, Brooke, Darcy) on the wood to remember our trip—our nickname thanks to the amazing staff at Ramon’s who remembered us as the “Little Black Dress” girls.

After Palapa, we headed into town for some local shopping and sightseeing. San Pedro is full of color and character, and we had the best time popping into shops and chatting with street vendors. Darcy found some adorable gifts for her girls, and we stocked up on small souvenirs and snacks. A must-do every time we’re here: The Belize Chocolate Company. Their handcrafted truffles and chocolate bars are out of this world. (Tip: you can book chocolate making classes at Belize Chocolate Company.)

That evening, we had dinner back at Pineapples on the Beach, Ramon’s beautiful beachfront restaurant. The whole setting is just dreamy—palm trees swaying, the sound of waves just beyond your table, and a team of waiters who treat you like family. Brooke ordered the Signature Steak on a Stone, which comes out sizzling on a hot lava rock, and I stuck with my forever favorite: the Pineapple Boat, loaded with shrimp, rice, and tropical flavor. Every bite is pure vacation.

After dinner, we weren’t quite ready to call it a night, so we went driving through town in search of street food—and let me tell you, we hit the jackpot.

We found a cart serving Marquesitas—thin, crispy rolled crepes filled with your choice of sweet or savory. We ordered one stuffed with Nutella (because obviously), and another with gruyère cheese, which sounds strange but was actually amazing. Warm, crispy, melty perfection. It was the kind of spontaneous, local moment that ends up being one of your favorite memories.

We wandered back to Ramon’s under string lights and stars, full of good food and good vibes. It was one of those nights where you just feel lucky to be right where you are.

Day 4: The Goodbye (and a Few Tips)

We had one last breakfast at Ramon’s before heading home, hearts full and already plotting the next trip. If you’re thinking of planning a girls’ getaway—especially to Belize—here’s what we learned:

Tips from Us Girls (Especially for First-Timers)

  • Pack light – You’ll live in swimsuits, sundresses, cover-ups, and athleisure.

  • Bring reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray – You’ll need both.

  • Ramon’s doesn’t serve alcohol, so stock up at duty-free or hit a store in town.

  • Medical access is easy – Darcy was battling mastitis and had no trouble finding a local pharmacy for antibiotics and cream.

  • Golf carts are your main ride – Expect bumpy roads, humidity, and lots of laughs.

  • You don’t need fancy shoes – Trust us.

  • The people are amazing – Kind, welcoming, and part of what makes Belize so special.

  • The food is unreal – From fine dining to waffles on the street, it’s all worth a try.

  • Bring snore strips – Not naming names, but after a few rum punches and long days in the sun, you’ll thank us later.

Why This Trip Was Different

I’ve been lucky to visit San Pedro many times, but this trip was different. Watching Darcy and Brooke fall in love with the island made me love it all over again. Sharing this place with two of my closest friends—on a trip my husband planned just for us—was one of the most meaningful, joy-filled experiences I’ve ever had.

If San Pedro is on your list, move it to the top. Whether it’s your first time or your fifth, this little island has a way of giving you exactly what you didn’t know you needed.
